Jr. Bliggins & the Rev. Truman Goines
The Legend of, Volume 1
(Sourland Mountain Music)
Review Date: January 2009
by Mark E. Gallo
Jr. Bliggins is a hot harper. A seriously-immersed-in-the-Sonny-Terry-whooping- style-harmonica-player. The right reverend Truman Goines is a guitarist and vocalist with a timbre that reminds of crash between Tom Waits and Blind Willie Johnson. The combination is tight and impressive when it works, as on “West Amwell,” “Sign of the Times,” “Two Step Dancin’,” and “Midnight Special Redux.” There is more than a dash of whimsy and schtick in the all original program. Theirs is a style that grows on the listener and may not appeal to all hues of blues ears. Fans of the raspy voiced shouting style with rat-a-tat drums and stand up bass (both courtesy of Tom Reock) will love it.
