Muddy Waters - Got My Mojo Working: Rare Performances 1968-1978 [VHS] or [DVD]
Die-hard Muddy Waters fans will welcome this 12-song, 54-minute compilation of excellent "rare" live performances (from 1968, '74, and '78). The indisputable highlight here is the '78 performance of "Mannish Boy," in which Muddy rips into a gospel-like delivery of one of his greatest signature songs. Pianist Pinetop Perkins joins in for a fun romp on "Caldonia."

Freddie King: The!!!! Beat (1994) [VHS only]
(Viewer's comments): If you're into the blues....AT ALL....you MUST buy this tape. Video is excellent, and audio is good too. There are a couple of tunes at the end of the tape that were recorded at a concert in Europe a few years after The Beat sessions. HOLY COW! Those are the crown jewels of this tape.
$24.98 from Amazon.
Blues Masters: The Essential History of the Blues, Vol. 1 [VHS only]
(Viewer's comments): I thought this series (both Vol. 1 and 2) were a good source of historic blues (and jazz) info. I especially like the way they corelate historic events such as the 1929 Market Crash and WWII with blues events and artists.

The Ladies Sing the Blues (1989) [DVD]
Culled from rare black-and-white footage from the early to mid-20th century, this excellent anthology showcases a number of gems from the best and brightest female vocalists in America. There's the radiant "Empress of the Blues" Bessie Smith in her only recorded film appearance singing "St. Louis Blues." The gospel great Sister Rosetta Tharpe delivers a down-home version of "That Lonesome Road," which is contrasted by jazzy and sassy Dinah Washington's "Lean Baby." The immortal Billie Holliday's touching 1957 TV performance of "Fine and Mellow," recorded with saxophonists Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, and Gerry Mulligan two years before her death in 1959, is the finest clip in this collection. From Ethel Waters and Sarah Vaughan to Lena Horne, Ida Cox, and Peggy Lee, this set shows why women have been the standard bearers of the American vocal tradition.
