by Mark E. Gallo
“Nothing Without You” opens this collection with a noodling guitar and brooding vocal interspersed with a message from the girl who left him on the answering machine. Not blues in structure, but bluesy in emotional content. Any solo effort is a risky proposition, as it lays the soul bare. Taylor’s soul is presented as tortured more than joyful. There is a darkness to this recording. The guitar work is often very impressive, particularly on the instrumental “Hey Hey” and “Travelling Late.” The vocals too often get lost in the mix and sound like they were recorded in secret. His “Fell In Love With Money” is lyrically impressive with equally nice guitar work. “The Underworld” is a clever tune that is given an exquisite introspective reading bolstered by superb guitar work. Production is a bit weak, but its a homemade offering and, as such, is sufficient.
