Vocalist Tom Clawson and his guitar playing son Alex front Buck 69, an energized band out of Toledo that rocks through a 14-song program of mostly originals. “When She Whispers Your Name”, just out on their own imprint, is an impressive affair that sometimes reminds of the Allman Brothers, largely due to the guitar work of the younger Clawson and co-lead guitarist Buzz Anderson (who shines on “Misery”). Producer John Sevilla contributes guitar, as well. On all of the numbers, vocalist Tom Clawson is seeped in the tradition, both on the few covers and abundant originals. Backing vocals from young Candice Coleman and Pam Berger spice it up here and there, and the rhythm team of Dave Alan (drums) and Todd Ovall (bass) keep it humming. When keyboardist B.J. Love joins the goin’s on, as he does on the title cut or “Risk It All,” the energy level notches up further. Impressive first outing.
