West Bank Fire 2/28/00 |
 |
The West Bank was on fire last night, and I’m not JUST talking about the music. It literally WAS on fire. The Keller Brothers Band had finished another great Sunday night show at Whiskey Junction and as I was driving down Cedar Avenue at a little after 1 a.m. a huge fire broke out just as I was passing by. The fire started in the historic 4 story Dania Hall (built in 1886 and currently vacant and under renovation), located next door (across a small greenspace) to the 5 Corners Saloon. I arrived even before the fire trucks and was amazed at just how fast that building went up in flames. Less than 45 minutes later most of the building had collapsed in a rubble (some of it crashing down on the cars parked out front along Cedar Avenue). Except for part of the outer shell it was totally destroyed. Ashes and debris were scattered for more than 2 blocks downwind (even covering my car which I had parked around the corner from the 400 Bar).

As you well know, many of the most influential bluesmen and women have not fared well financially and therefore are without healthcare insurance and have no savings in the case of illness, either acute or chronic. The BluesAid project is an extension of the Sonny Boy Blues Society’s local efforts to help these aging artists obtain the proper medical help and medications they may have otherwise gone without."
