Dr Project Point Blank Blues Band
Live in Concert at Sremska Mitrovica State Penitentiary
(PGP - DVD 490217 SOKOJ)
By Gordon Baxter
Serbia's Dr Project Point Blank Blues Band's DVD, which is part documentary, and part live recording, was recorded back in 2006. The documentary part shows that the band have a humorous side, but the live recording is very much serious, having been made in a prison with an audience of inmates.
The four piece band show that they really can play, and live up to the expectations created by their studio albums. They mostly stick to rocking uptempo numbers, which they deliver with some aplomb. The engine room of Zoran Milenkovic (bass) and Jovan Pejcinovic provide the rock solid foundation on which Darko Grujic (keys) and the Dr himself (guitar) weave their magic, and sing in perfect English. Apart from the opening "Rambling On My Mind" and the closer "Got My Mojo Working", all of the songs are originals, and songs like the excellent "Move Your Body" comfortably hold their own against the covers. In fact, there are no bad tracks here.
The audience reaction makes them seem like a tough nut to crack but by the end the band have won many (if not all) of them over. Many of them even join in, clapping in time as the band members each get a turn in the spotlight on the closing track.
There are four bonus tracks too, adding up to over an hour's entertainment. Dr Project Point Blank Blues Band are an act worth catching. Given that they are unlikely to be playing in your town in the immediate future, "Live in Concert..." is worth tracking down because it gives you a very good idea of just what you have been missing.
