Coming from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Irishman Gary Moore manages to crossover into the blues rock contingency. Moore's firebrand attacks, while audio delights to his long time fans, are deemed offensive by those who like their blues on the quieter side of life.
The DVD Live at Montreaux 1990 finds Moore slashing his way through cover tunes and pioneering a blueprint of heavy metal blues. The highlights of the DVD is Moore bringing out Albert Collins to guest on some spots. "Further On Up The Road" finds Collins and Moore comically engaged in a guitarslinger's that has a watcher hitting rewind over and over.
Moore works at such hyped manic speeds that the Montreaux audience barely has time to catch their breath. He will land his shred plane in his own compositions "Midnight Blues" and "Still Got The Blues" to adjust the volume controls to 5. Moore's zeppelin doesn't stay on the ground too long. "Texas Strut" finds him in the center of the Lone Star Galaxy and discovering those licks made popular by elder statesmen Stevie Ray Vaughan and Billy Gibbons.
Fortunately Gary doesn't paint himself in a corner going for that "Texas Sound" only. With Fleetwood Mac's Peter Green being a primary influence, Moore cranks it to 10 and lets his Les Paul speak the blues in an authoritative voice. His command of Roy Buchanan's "The Messiah Will Come Again" is a display of technical genius from tiptoeing on the fretboard to being trampled under foot.
Three bonus tracks from the 1997 Montreaux festival find Moore putting his blues shoes away and lighting the fuse to his heavy metal cannon.
Those who enjoy Gary's fire and fury blues excursions, will want to seek out this disk. If you want your blues from the hammers of the gods, this dvd will be your favorite.
