Sweet Angel
Handle Your Business
(MAC, 2008)
Review Date: November 2009
by Norman Darwen
I was a little disappointed on hearing this CD – though not because Sweet Angel has turned in a sub-standard performance, quite the opposite! It reminded me of the classic southern soul/ blues sound that is so hard–to-find these days, but an approach that Sweet Angel can certainly handle with aplomb. She sounds totally convincing on every track – from 'Angel Sings The Blues' (a rewrite of BB King's 'Why I Sing The Blues') and the strongly assertive 'Women's National Anthem', a response to James Brown's 'It's A Man's Man's Man's World', to the ballad 'I Love My Man' and the lilting 'Oops!' Memphis-born (I'm too much of a gentleman to say when) Sweet Angel – or Clifetta Dobbins if you prefer - is bold, brassy and sassy, and deserves to be far better known than she is. Although a number like the original 'Rock Me' is recognisably a Blues track, its antecedents are not that obvious. Overall though, this album may not contain cutting-edge music (and the Ecko label issued a version a little different from this promo), but its blend of blues, soul, and a little jazz – I assume that is Angel's own sax playing on the instrumental 'No Boundaries'? – all of it with a southern tinge, certainly brought a smile to my face, and left me definitely wanting to hear more. Angel has certainly helped me get over my disappointment!
