Microwave Dave & The Nukes
Down South Nukin’
(Rockin’ Camel Music, 2006)
Review Date: Oct 2009
by Norman Darwen
The name and CD title give it away, and the raucous first few introductory seconds of this live recording underline it – there’s nothing subtle about this Huntsville, Alabama-based three-piece outfit. Now ordinarily that might be a damning criticism, but when your inspirations are the likes of Bo Diddley (with whom the trio toured), J.B. Hutto, Elmore James, and Hound Dog Taylor, such a comment has exactly the opposite intent. This kind of music is about getting up out of your seat, then getting down and having a good time. That’s just what the listener should do with this – music to shake what you’ve got to. I defy anyone to listen to virtually any track here and not move – if you don’t, you’re dead! (or maybe you just don’t like the blues). Dave Gallaher honed his guitar chops across the south and in Vietnam, and his gruff voice suits his material – which on this CD also includes, besides those already mentioned, songs by Dee Clark, Doc Pomus, Young Jessie, Dyke & The Blazers, and Bob Dylan. Or to put it another way, hard rockin’, good timin’ blues, Dylan included.
Recorded over four nights in Gadsden, Alabama in front of an audience audibly having a wonderful time and happy to show their appreciation, this is a wonderful way to make the acquaintance of Microwave Dave and company. If you already know him though, chances are you’ve bought this already. And you know what? The more I listen, the more I spot the subtleties in the playing…
