Dr Project Point Blank Blues Band
A Whiter Shade of Blue
(RTS - CD417771 SOKOJ)
Review Date: Nov 2009
by Gordon Baxter
If resilience was all that was needed to be successful, Dr Project Point Blank Blues Band would be right up at the top of the pile. The Serbians have kept playing together for around 25 years as the country around them was ripped apart.
Dr Project write excellent songs, and the opener, "The Devil, God and I" is another one to add to the list. It has great lyrics, and the keyboards capture the sound of the Doors at their best. The band's full sound is rounded out further by a range of guest musicians, including Budimir Vletic (guble and vocals) on the segue of "Buda's Lament (Radio VOX)" and "Golden Arrows" with its hints of the Neville Brothers.
There are no fillers, and whether rocking out on songs like "Mama I Blew It" or slowing things down on "Last Pain", or the closing epic "Love That Hurts", the band always sound at home. This holds true even when they venture into country territory ("No Pride"), and on "A Song for V.", which could easily have come from the Leonard Cohen songbook.
"A Whiter Shade of Blue" is yet another very fine album from a very fine blues band. Dr Project could comfortably hold their own against most top British and American blues bands. Let us hope that it is not another five years until the next album.
