Bob Ryszkiewicz
The Ghost of Elvis
(No Label)
Review Date: November 2009
by Tom Hamilton
I was never a huge Elvis Presley fan but I do understand the respect and adoration the man deserved. So when I first picked up this CD I cautiously placed it in the player thinking it could be a sickly tribute to the King. Oh, how wrong I was, it's an indictment of the state of our music industry today, with 'The Ghost' asking Bob " what have they done to the gospel, and where's my rock'n'roll"
This single track CD, 'The Ghost of Elvis', is self released from Montreal session guitarist, blues man, and performance artist Bob Ryszkiewicz on which he plays all guitars, keyboards and "weird noises" . The track opens on an ambient drum beat with what sounds like a dobro playing over, leading into a soaring blues guitar rift which introduces us to Bob's growling narration of a bike trip to Memphis leading to a vision of Elvis' ghost. All the different musical sounds melt together beautifully, like a Robbie Robertson track worked over by the sadly missed Roxy Gordon. It all sounds like a blues take on a Raymond Chandler novel, we could could have a new genre here, called 'blues-noir'.
Bob's music can be downloaded from most of the big music web sites, along with one other track. It may not be everyones taste but there is a huge talent here who is willing to challenge the listener and I look forward to hearing a complete album.
