Tommy Keys
Side Street Boogie
(2007 Indi)
Review Date: Feb 2008
by Diana Olson
Written on the back of his newest release "Side Street Boogie", Tommy Key’s says he is paying tribute to all of the out of the way nightclubs, galleries, barrelhouses and theaters. The ones you find down the side streets and alleyways of the inner city. There, is where Tommy believes art and music are at their raw best.
On "Side Street Boogie", Tommy Keys plays the piano, harmonica, bass, drums and percussion, and he sings all the songs, some of them his originals. On three tracks he's joined by Ken Korb on harmonica, Al Henneborn on drums, Miranda Gatewood on bass, and Mike DeLuca on pedal steel.
On "Rum Boogie Woogie", it’s just Tommy and his piano. Its full of barrelhouse blues that makes you want to get up and dance. Tommy shows his excellent use of the harp on "Singing the Blues. “Blue Moon River” is a sultry sweet melody that takes you down a big city alleyway lit with a blue moon light. Tommy makes it easy to visualize this one. Ok, that’s my favorite on the CD. “A Song for You" is a wonderful ballad that Tommy sings beautifully. It also features Mike De Luca on the pedal steel adding a touch of country to the sound.
Not surprising “When the Saints” was added with enthusiasm. You can tell how much fun it was for Tommy to do this number. This CD is easy to listen to from beginning to end.
