Sean Costello
We Can Get Together
(2008 Delta Groove Music, CD - DGPDC 120)
Review Date: December 2008
by Robert T. Murphy
The late Sean Costello was an excellent performer. If you want to know how good he was, check out the numerous youtube videos where he put everything he had into his music. He didn't just play the blues, he felt the blues. This CD has mostly self penned songs, so he was an excellent song writer to top it off.
Some samples from the CD:
'Anytime You Want' echos Rory Gallagher in vocal and guitar style, with plenty of feel. 'Same Old Game' provides a gritty vocal with old time blues feel. 'Can't Let Go' provides some really neat guitar work and vocals in a funky style that reminds me a bit of Benard Allison. 'Hard Luck Women' reminds me a bit of Chicago Blues with some gritty vocals and excellent guitar work which accents the song. 'How In The Devil' almost gets into ZZ Top style of music with a boogie beat and guitar style. 'Have You No Shame' is a slow blues, that reminds me a bit of Motown in feel. 'Going Home', one of the few songs not written by Sean Costello, reminds me a bit of Buddy Guy in guitar style. 'Fee Like I Ain't Got a Home' gets back into a style similar to Rory Gallagher with guitar work that is not so much solo picking but chordal picking.
Bottom Line: Excellent guitar work, vocals with a hint of Rory Gallagher, Benard Allison, and a few others depending on the song with a solid traditional blues guitar style. I would say that he leans towards more traditional blues that rock/blues. If your tastes run in that direction, then this might be a CD for you. If you are looking for rockin blues, then you might want to look elsewhere. In any case this is an excellent CD, and truly shows what the world has lost. I give it four out of five stars.
