Magic Slim & The Teardrops
Midnight Blues
(© 2008 Blind Pig)
Review Date: Nov 23, 2008
by Ray Stiles
This is the most recent lineup of the Teardrops backing Magic Slim (Jon McDonald on guitar, Danny O’Connor on bass and David Simms on drums). This new CD from Magic Slim & The Teardrops continues to feature that same remarkable, raw, barroom electric Chicago blues we have come to love and associate with Magic Slim over the years. The variety of traditional blues songs and a number of new ones from Morris Holt feature that hard-driving Teardrops rhythm and signature lead guitar playing of Magic Slim. Slim’s vocals, always rough and raw, have a slightly softer edge to them on this CD. He must be mellowing a little with age. But we still get that occasional (Howlin’ Wolf-like growl).
This CD is produced by Nick Moss and features guest appearances by Elvin Bishop, Lonnie Brooks, Little Ed, James Cotton and Otis Clay, among others. So we get to hear some other favorite Chicago bluesmen playing with Magic Slim and adding something new to the mix that doesn’t really change the basic nature of Slim’s music, but just adds a little more spice to the stew. For example, Lil’ Ed’s raucous slide guitar on the classic Give Me Back My Wig, or James Cotton’s wailing harp on You Can’t Lose What You Ain’t Never Had. Then there’s the track that has Elvin Bishop and Magic Slim trading licks that is sweet to hear. The last cut on the new CD features Otis Clay backing up Slim on vocals supported by a horn section that offers a slightly new dimension to an otherwise classic Magic Slim recording. Nice Stuff.
This is a very good addition to Magic Slim’s growing collection of Chicago Blues. I know Magic Slim fans anticipate every new release and for me this new one has been a pleasure to listen to.
