Magic Slim & The Teardrops
The Essential Magic Slim
(© 2007 Blind Pig)
Review Date: Nov 23, 2008
by Ray Stiles
If this is your first exposure to Magic Slim & The Teardrops then this is a fine starting point. This 15 track CD gives you a mini tour through 6 of his Blind Pig CDs spanning the past decade. It features Morris Holt (Magic Slim) on guitar and lead vocals, his brother Nick (on bass), a quartet of drummers and the lead guitar playing of John Primer, Steve Freund, Michael Dotson, Jake Dawson.
Magic Slim’s music is what some would consider to be pure Chicago electric barroom blues (if there is such a thing). Its raw, its spontaneous, its hard driving, its foot tapping two guitars, bass and drums, and of course the unmistakable guttural, gravely, growling voice of Slim himself.
I have to say that for me, the unique lead guitar playing of Magic Slim is one of those pure delights that I just can’t get enough of. He has some wonderful repeating riffs that I hear variations of on different songs throughout his vast repertoire that is mesmerizing – just wonderful stuff that I love to listen to over and over again. I’m listening to the guitar solo from “Black Tornado” right now and have to stop, close my eyes and just let the sound wash over me (and its always the same with “What’s Wrong”)—wonderful stuff.
So if you are already a fan of Magic Slim, you probably already have most, it not all of the CDs that these songs come from (Gravel Road, Snakebite, Scufflin’, Black Tornado, Blue Magic, Anything Can Happen). If you don’t or if you think you might like a quick source to find some of your favorite cuts, then this is a very good CD to add to your collection. And if this is your first exposure to the Magic of the Teardrops, then this is an excellent starting point. And by all means, catch him live and in your face.
