Every once in a while (not often enough, in fact) a CD comes along that grabs me from the first notes coming out of the speakers and leaves me wondering, "who are these guys?" "Where are they from?" "Why haven’t’ I heard about them before?" Or just, "wow, these guys (or gals, if they happen to be) are really good."
This is one of those CDs. Pure and simple. Excellent.
The name might lead you to expect this to be another Tex-Mex recording. And you would be partly right. It’s actually: tex-mex-blues-rockabilly-rock and roll-Mexican music from a California group. What that means is there is no real classification of this music. It’s just fun music. Exciting music. Dancing, foot-tapping music. The kind of sound that its hard not to get up and move a little, or in my case, at least tap my foot or nod my head in rhythm to the music. And that’s big.
Listening to the various songs I was reminded of influences ranging from Rockpile and Dave Demunds, The Texas Tornados and Freddie Fender, Lloyd Price and Clifton Chenier. Quite a boiling pot mixture and the results are just wonderful. And I haven’t even mentioned the choice guitar playing of Kid Ramos who joins the band made up of Jesus Cuevas on vocals and accordion, James Barrios on bass and background vocals and Mike Molina on drums.
They are only playing in the California area right now so heads up booking agents. Get them out here to the Midwest pronto. And definitely buy this CD.
