Little Pigeon’s ForHill Blues
Mr. B
(Kasandra Studio, 2007)
Review Date: Mar 2008
by Lisa Gault
Little Pigeon’s ForHill Blues combines a bit of country blues, great harmonica playing and an Eastern European sound that originates from the north-west region of Croatia, called Zagorje. Their CD, entitled “Mr. B” is a fun compilation of blues and traditional tunes, chalked full of energy! The CD kicks off with, “T-Train Kick” which features Tomislav Goluban’s (“Tomi Little Pigeon”) high energy harmonica playing. The rest of the band follows suit, while playing acoustically. Tomi’s deep vocals contrast with the lighter acoustic guitar and harmonica playing. Some of the tunes are sung in Croatian, so I have no idea what they’re singing about, but hey, the music makes me want to dance! The slide guitar playing by Krunoslav Dobricevic (“Krumpa”) adds a nice feel to the sound, as does the trombone and percussion playing by Nikola Santro (“Prof”). Nikola Herceg rounds off the band with some strong bass playing and backing vocals. The tune, “Mr. B” features the hollow sound of the ha rmonica followed by vibes. This slow instrumental tune seems to play out the scene of the lonely cowboy slowly riding off into the sunset.
The traditional “Liza Jane” is a fast paced, lively song that will have you humming, “oh, Liza, sweet Liza Jane….for hours.” The song, “Brag to Brag” is an instrumental tune that contrasts the light, rhythmic guitar and harp playing with the smooth jazz stylings of Boris Saronja. Interesting combination! “See You Later Alligator” is another fun piece that makes you want to kick up your heels to dance. “The ForHill Train” is an energetic tune that reflects a bit of this band’s roots and/or heritage. The words,
“That good, old train of ours that whistled always when needed or not
Always was a good companion and drove us to our hometown
And a real trooper alright with all the many stops it had
It still found the time to take us back home.”
Check out their web site, and if you like harmonica playing, and lively acoustic blues with a European flair, order their CD! I know when I get to Croatia someday, I’ll aim to check out this band!
