Lil’ Ed and the Blues Imperials
Full Tilt
(© 2008 Alligator Records)
Review Date: Nov 23, 2008
by Ray Stiles
Lil’ Ed Williams can really shake things up with his raucous slide guitar playing, reminiscent of influences like his uncle and blues mentor JB Hutto, and Hound Dog Taylor. You can’t get much better than that for this style of searing Chicago slide guitar playing. And Lil’ Ed is carrying on that tradition in fine fashion.
This CD features the smoking, searing slide playing that shakes the shingles off the roof of your house when the CD player is turned up loud on songs like Take Five, Hold That Train that bookend the remaining songs on this CD. But there’s more to Lil’ Ed’s playing than just that, as his fans know. He also has a slow, simmering, slide style that sneaks up on you and allows you to get in a smooth groove with the music on songs like Every Man Needs a Good Woman and Life Got In The Way.
Lil’ Ed is joined on this CD by his long time band mates, Michael Garrett, James “Pookie” Young and Kelly Littleton. This is another superb outing by one of the giants keeping this style of blues alive and well.
