Khalif "Wailin'" Walter
Let Me Say That Again
(Own label - no issue number © 2006 & 2007)
Review Date: December 2008
by Norman Darwen
This fine CD presents straight-ahead, guitar-based Chicago club blues - despite
being recorded in Germany. No-one should be too surprised at that though as
singer and guitarist Khalif "Wailin'" Walter is the young-ish nephew of ace
Windy City guitarist Carl Weathersby (whom he lists as an influence - along with
Otis Rush, Freddie King, Albert King, Albert Collins and Lonnie Brooks) and has
been based in Europe for a few years now. It is no surprise that he is building
up a healthy fan-base, as he tours constantly and plays the Blues squarely in
the modern tradition of those just named, though without any outright copying.
His vocals are unadorned and extremely effective, whilst his guitar playing is
generally powerful and appropriate to each individual number, and whilst he does
stretch out, with the shortest track at just under four minutes and the longest
eleven seconds short of seven and a half minutes, he does largely keep things
tight and focused. It is also good to note that whilst he can pursue the
high-energy angle, he can also turn in a fine, very jazzy 'Connie-Lee' (nice
piano on this from Rusty Hall, who also turns up on recordings by the likes of
Eric Lambert, Bernard Allison and Curtis Salgado i.e. he knows just what is
needed!) and capture the lazy Jimmy Reed style perfectly on 'You Don't Have To
Go'. Most of the remaining titles are standards, but performed in Walter's own
way, which makes this a release of definite interest to lovers of the real
Chicago blues.
