Dave Hole
Rough Diamond
(Blind Pig Records, BPCD5114)
Review Date: Nov 2008
by Arthur Shuey
When the British Invasion task force hit Chicago in the mid-'60s, there was already a strong emphasis on big, crackling electricity there, probably exemplified best by the Buddy Guy/Junior Wells “Hoodoo Man” recording. Eventually, had the Rolling Stones and, to a lesser extent, early Fleetwood Mac, John Mayall's Bluesbreakers and other disciples of America's music not sent their immense shadow over the Atlantic, the Chicago sound would have refined into something very akin to that of this Dave Hole release.
Sustain, slide and plaintive vocals mark the tunes. The rhythm section, inventing itself as an insanely sane frenzy, supports the frontman's guitar like a large pile of broken, colored glass.
Oh, did I mention that this is the kind of blues that probably attracted most of today's listeners to the genre in the first place?
