Scottie Miller
Livin Between the Black n White
(Independent)
Review Date: October 2007
by Diana Olson
Scottie Miller’s “Livin Between the Black n White” is his dedication to the piano blues forefathers. Specifically, Scott says, “Otis Spann, the best piano playin’ and singin’ there is in the blues planet”. This CD is entirely piano/vocal and made up of old blues standards that Scott has masterly added his own touch to. By that, I mean a classic blues sounding voice and piano. He has found a way to deliver them both with grace and guts.
From Memphis Slim atHot Club Paris, to “Good Morning Mr. Blues” – from Otis Spann to Amos Mellburn’s “Bad-Bad Whiskey”, the CD sounds a lot like a history lesson in American blues. Scott, with his consistent talent, leaves me feeling like I just visited a performance in a steamy southern bar where blues are always at the top of the menu.
