What a great little gem of a recording this is. Superb guitar work by Phil Guy, Byther Smith, and Sammy Lawhorn Having these three guitar players, in their prime, playing behind Junior really addend to the enjoyment of the show. And that’s what this recording felt like—that I was sitting in the room with the band. This was like being in a real informal atmosphere, among friends, enjoying some down-home blues. I especially liked his rendition of Juke.
The between-song-patter by Junior is relaxed and funny. Reminds me of the many times I saw him playing in various clubs around Chicago and Minneapolis. During the breaks and after the show he would hold court like he was royalty. A kindly prince, or godfather as he called himself during one of the songs, Junior was always ready to have his picture taken with you. He was always very approachable, at least in my experience with him. I remember once we ran into him at the House of Blues in Chicago. I think Shirley King was playing a set downstairs and we saw him out in the hall as we were heading upstairs to see Otis Rush. He was more than happy to pause for a few moments to chat and have his picture taken with one of my daughters.
This was a pretty good quality recording considering its more than 30 years old (there was some mike hissing here and there however). Junior, thanks for the memories, and thank you Delmark for releasing this gem.
