Cathy Jean
Little Sick Twist
(self-produced)
Review Date: October 2007
by Mark E. Gallo
Cathy Jean’s Sick Little Twist is all about caricature. From the pin-up provocative cover art to the 15 sex-themed self-penned tunes, Cathy Jean is after … well, what she’s after might be the horny boys and girls attracted to the photographs and further enticed by the lyrical content, or perhaps she’s after the listener with a sense of humor (sick and twisted or not), an appreciation for well written material and a wry take on life – sorta like the musical version of reading for the articles. Whichever way one approaches this, it delivers.
From the opening “Bitchovich,” on which she sings “You lounge on the couch like a drugged out brothel whore/intelligent conversation for you is a frightening chore,” to the closing “Ripe Garden” (“I got me a fairytale with a Little Sick Twist”), she comes across as clever and an undeniable master of the lyric. Add to this rockin’ , often blues-based musical accompaniment, and the results are a superb album that might catch the listener off guard. The cover art says that she’s a blonde with a bombshell body, so she can’t be brilliant, now can she?
Her voice is as strong as Nancy Wilson from Heart, and the band is wholly impressive, particularly guitarist Keith Stafford. Harp wizard Mark Wenner sits in on “So Proud” (“Its always up and ready when I want it to be/it is strong very good looking and oh so sturdy/and doesn’t need any pill to make it healthy”). Sort of like blues pornography, it’s a twisted little secret to listen to and damn if it ain’t just an absolutely spectacular recording!
