Amberjack Rice
Get So Little
(Amberjack Rice, 2004, ARR-007)
Review Date: October 2007
by Steve Mainwaring
Amberjack Rice appears to be Rice Moorehead from Texas, who plays guitar and bass, sings, wrote and co-produced this album, plus a couple of friends. Their website (www.amberjackrice.com) describes them as “Two-fisted roots music”, which if anything exaggerates the level of subtlety on show here most of the time. About half the tracks are heads-down no-nonsense boogie reminiscent of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Status Quo, “Spirit In The Sky” – you don’t need me to go on. The others are more reflective and, for me, interesting, like “I Saw A Stranger” and “Paula And Fred”, showing more compositional and musical originality. I get the impression that in doing what he thinks is crowd-pleasing, he is actually pleasing fewer people than he would if he ploughed his own furrow rather more. If you still mourn the passing of Creedence and John Fogerty doesn’t release enough albums for your liking, you might want to investigate this.
