Like his southern singer/songwriter contemporaries J.J.Cale and Bobby Charles, Tony Joe White’s genius remains too much of a cult status deserving of more awareness. White enjoyed success over 30 years ago with hits “Polk Salad Annie” and the classic “Rainy Night in Georgia”. Recent years have witnessed an ambitious return to recording. The bayou song master ‘s 1999 disc, “One Hot July” is a totally engaging swamp infused moody and beautiful effort. White’s latest, “The Heroines”, includes performances with a number of his favorite female artists, including Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and his daughter, Michelle White. Vocally smooth and deep like aged bourbon, laced with Whites remarkable, soulful guitar work, “The Heroines” scores with every song. The duets all work perfectly: Jessi Colter accompanies on the haunting “Fireflies in the Storm”, Lucinda Williams heats up the sultry “Closing in on the Fire”. White’s unique signature style, a Louisiana blend of rural folk blues and roots music is much more than the sum of its sources. From the Appalachian folk overtones of “Wild Wolf Calling Me” featuring Emmylou Harris, to the low down slow “Rich Woman Blues” it’s all Tony Joe White music. White’s recent re-entry into recording gives listeners another chance to discover this somewhat obscure gem of a musician.
