“Root City” is a band I’d like to see in live setting as this CD indicates some good potential, but a problem with bands like this one is how to transfer their live energy into studio outings as some of it gets lost on the way in production duties of people involved.
Three piece bands are usually hard to record studio wise, because usually results pale by comparison to live performances and “Root City” qualifies to that category too, probably stronger production would make things much better.
Lead guitarist and vocalist Alex Rossi wrote all 11 tracks in basically rock vein with funky edges and even some rap (!) maybe to catch up with contemporary trends (“Burning It Down” for example). Personal favorite is excellent “Lay Your Love Down”, but there’s no blues on offering here and while his lyrics offer personal observations of everyday life, music itself lacks the punch and gets a bit repetitive after prolonged listening. Alex and fellow musicians are definitely capable of bigger things and only a hint can be traced on “A Manny Too Few”. Live they probably do it OK, but here their music rarely takes off and I am expecting their next recordings as soon as possible!
