Guitar virtuoso Peter Lang is a master of guitar style and one of the finest finger style guitarists in the world today. His 2003 release, Guitar, represents a change in direction for this fine musician as he used this recording to test his mettle performing his magic on a 12-string guitar. Lang, ever the perfectionist, Lang admittedly put a lot of time and effort into this recording, debating several times whether or not it was even a good idea to attempt such insanity (on his part anyway).
Guitar is comprised of eleven original compositions combining sounds and scales from the East and West, many with a definite blues feeling. The songs on Guitar pay tribute to members of Lang’s family, as well as such notables as Mississippi John Hurt, John Fahey, W. C. Handy and Minnesota’s own, Dave “Snaker” Ray. Blues fans will particularly enjoy songs like “John Hurt in the 21st Century,” “I Should Have Known,” “Brick House Blues” and “Snaker Ray Has Come & Gone.” Among my personal favorites on the CD are the opener, “Little Cairo” with its combination of middle-eastern and western feelings; “Snaker Ray Has Come & Gone” an exceptionally fine bluesy instrumental and “Witness to the Messenger,” a tribute to John Fahey that rings of several other well known finger style players.
Guitar comes highly recommended for fans of Peter Lang, finger style guitar and even fans willing to take a break from the more a traditional sounds of the blues.
