Those who’ve been following Otis Taylor’s previous work, will find his latest release, Below the Fold(Telarc Records), a memorable, less predictable recording. Reminiscent of recent outings, this seventh album seems to take a familiar route until veering off course just enough to enjoy the heartfelt shift in mood and direction. Taylor continues delivering his unique brand of gutsy blues, most have come to expect from one of the finest singer/songwriters in contemporary blues music today. Below The Fold, is a solid acoustic adventure, showcasing Taylor’s trademark style of distinctive storytelling together with his signature "trance blues’ sound. Many describe this "trance blues" rhythmic pattern as hypnotic and mesmerizing, some call it monotonous. In my opinion, Taylor’s original "trance blues" sound is infectious. It’s a pulsing beat felt deep within, stirring the soul and pulling you back for more.
Below The Fold contains ten originals, most addressing social issues taken from Taylor’s personal experiences and historical events. Several tracks bring into sharp focus the harsh reality of racial injustice, prostitution and homelessness. "Hookers In The Street" and "Government Lied", highlight Taylor’s interpretive storytelling style, pointing a spotlight on the painful truth courageously spoken in his lyrics. The genuine authenticity and artistic growth easily identified within these compositions, ultimately separate Below The Fold from anything previously recorded. Several tracks offer uplifting themes and a lighter mood, somewhat unexpected, yet pleasantly surprising. Taylor shares feelings of sheer joy for playing blues on the sizzling opener, "Feel Like Lightning", loving admiration on "Working For the Pullman Company"(daughter Cassie singing lead) and tender intimacy on, "Went To Hermes". Your given a rare opportunity to experience the softer side of Taylor, who’s much better known for his profound intensity. It would be a mistake to assume this is any indication of future changes in musical direction. Taylor still packs a punch, with no intention of abandoning his winning approach for covering more somber, disturbing issues that continue fueling the success behind his music.
One major characteristic featured throughout Below The Fold, is the wide variety of instrumentation applied. Taylor’s use of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, trumpet, cello and percussion, distinctly articulates the vivid imagery amplified on each track. He explores different areas of American Roots Music, adding layers of bluegrass, jazz, folk, and rock, over the albums solid blues base, enhancing the bonds shared between both Delta and Appalachian blues formats.
Below The Fold, initially sounds like a repeat performance of previous work until giving it a closer listen. Upon further review, you’ll soon discover this new album to be a gratifying journey through one of music’s most treasured genres. The emotional sincerity of Taylor’s compositions as well as his powerful performance style are precisely what makes this latest effort such an enjoyable ride. Below The Fold, is a welcome addition that’s certain to please loyal fans and newcomers alike.
