There’s no blues on “Standing Wide-Legged And Proud” latest by LZ Phoenix, but bluesy vibe is evident throughout this very enjoyable CD. Strong production with fine vocals and great musicianship prevail this original outing that draws a significant inspiration from Stax, HI Records 60’s and 70’s oriented material with hints of recent trends (Prince), expertly executed by all parties involved. “Baby I’ll Talk To You” is like a song from An Peebles songbook and that speaks for itself, while “Spy”, “Florida Say” and “Lift me Up” are dance-floor killers. “Serious” is a mid tempo funk with bluesy feel and fine vocal interplay. “All These Days” is unusual, almost psychedelic feel with strings, backing vocals reminding of 60’s R&B infused pop, great! “Freak Side” would complement Prince with “Earth, Wind & Fire” backing him! Most of the songs have great radio friendly potential and I think that Anastacia could do miracles with some of the tunes here (Clouds, Heal Me, Lift Me Up). No gimmicks here, just honest approach to music with talented people who know what and how it can be done. I expect LZ Phoenix growing with every new release and gaining what they deserve and that’s a lot!
