After electrifying listeners with his self-titled debut, Johnny Winter quickly followed up with a rousing assemblage on Second Winter. This time around Winter didn’t let up on the tempo and there were no acoustic tracks were featured on this sophomore release. Although he was still a bit of an outcast compared to other psychedelic blues-rock units of the day, his purist attitude was a welcome change. The young guitar slinger wore his influences on his sleeve he ripped through such ditties as ‘Memory Pain’ along side of 50’s anthems ‘Slippin’ and Slidin’’ and ‘Johnny B. Goode’. Seems like everyone was covering Bob Dylan in the late 1960’s and Johnny Winter was no exception. He revamped ‘Highway 61 Revisited’ adding his signature slide work. Stepping way outside the mainstream, Johnny flirted with some big band swing on ‘I Hate Everybody’. The new deluxe edition features two previously unreleased tracks; ‘Early In The Morning’ and an adrenaline pumped instrumental ‘Tell The Truth’. As if that weren’t enough, the remastered version come with a bonus disc highlighting a 1970 live set at the Royal Albert Hall which includes the classic’s ‘Help Me’, ‘It’s My Own Fault’ and brother Edgar’s hit ‘Frankenstein’. If his debut set the groundwork, Second Winter sealed the deal and there was no denying this white kid from Texas could play the blues.
