Jeff Laseys CD was recorded "live in Studio", recorded in one take with no over dubbing or special effects. Eleven songs are included of which five are self penned and the remaining six are covers of what could be called "standards" in the blues genre. covers include T-Bone Walker's 'Stormy Monday', T-bone Shuffle, R.G Fords's 'Crosscut Saw', Elmore James's 'The Sky Is Crying' and Kenny Burrell's 'Chitlins Con Carne'. The covers are generally done with the quality of a competent bar band with little new territory explored, or arrangements that stray far from the originals. 'Pawn Shop Blues', one of the original songs, is a basic slow tempo blues song, minimal arangment, with a John Lee Hooker feel to it. 'Jeff's Jump' is a swinging instrumental with a mixture of blues and rockabilly licks and is one of the better songs on the CD, although it clocks in at only 2:17. 'Love Fades Away' has a jazzy laid back feel to it and sounds like something you might hear in a 50's blues club. 'Cold Fusion' continues with the laid back jazzy feel with the guitar comping chords with short fills throughout this instrumental.
Bottom Line: There's no new ground covered here, the originals are better than the covers. The mix is good, and the vocals have that gravely blues bite to them, along with competent instrumental work. I give this two stars out of five.
