Guitarist Tom Principato's solo career, which spans 20 years, has been very prolific, recording almost one album a year. Add in a list of performing credits with such blues luminaries as Freddie King, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Dr. John and it quickly becomes evident that there can be no doubting his credentials as a guitarist. For his latest album, "House On Fire" he is supported by his regular band of John Perry (bass) and Joe Wells (drums) with Tommy Lepson on Hammond B-3.
The unmistakeable sound of the B-3 helps mark the introduction to "'Till I Get What I Came Here For." Principato's playing here has a slightly rocky edge, combined with the twangy sound used by Albert Lee. It is followed by the first of six instrumentals, "Apricot Brandy," where you can sit back and really start to appreciate Principato as a guitarist.
Musically the band tackle a range of styles, all with equal aplomb. The New Orleans funk workout of "Voodoo Thing" and the Bar-Kays like "House on Fire" both stand out among the vocal tracks, with Lepson doing a very good job on B-3. The jazzy leanings of the instrumentals "Very Blue" and "Break Out!" are equally worthy of mention.
After "Break Out!" the album rounds off with two further instrumentals. "Baptised in Muddy Water" features some very neat interplay between the churchy organ of Lepson and Principato's guitar. There is then a radical shift as the whole band return for a fairly straight rendition of Roy Buchanan's "Done Your Daddy Dirty."
Fans of blues guitar in its many guises will find plenty to admire on "House On Fire." Tom Principato is a fine guitarist, and the supporting cast of musicians form a very tight cohesive unit, with Lepson's B-3 giving the sound that extra little something that helps set it apart from many other albums of the same ilk.
