Todd Tijerina is a first-rate guitar player from Albuquerque, New Mexico who spent time "cutting heads" in Chicago. Judging from this release, he picked up a few tricks while there. Welcome Home has a broader range of styles compared to his previous work. Like so many other yarn guitarists he had a taste for the Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas-style blues only.
Tijerina wrote all eleven tunes except for one. This one cover song, "Blues At My Baby's House", is without a doubt the most straight-ahead blues track on the CD. His vocals are serviceable but his playing more than makes up for the it. There is an instrumental track,"E Jam", that lets him work out on guitar. He has help on this cut by keyboardist Larry Freedman, with whom he matches note for note. They both get this "underwater" sound perfected by Jimi Hendrix and used by Robert Ward and Bnois King. It's on a song with vocals that Tijerina really kicks it in gear. On "I Meant It" his guitar playing has as much power and expression as any guitarist I've heard in a short one minute solo. He really means it, and says it all with his guitar.
Todd Tijerina continues to improve with each recording session. His is getting to the point where his music is distinctive. Welcome Home is his most fully realized CD. It's just a matter of time before he gets a major label release.
