Absorbing the sounds of musical icons Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughn have been the catalysts Sean Chambers uses to create his latest offering entitled "Humble Spirits." Throw in a little Billy Gibbons and Robin Trower and you get the idea of what makes Chambers' musical clock tick.
Enlisting the services of Bernard Allison, Sonny Charles, The Toler Brothers and assorted other musical cronies help Chambers in fleshing out a gritty sound that recalls classic rock and presents blues power at its strongest moments.
As a songwriter, Chambers may well be hitting his stride. Opening cut "Time Passes" is the perfect leader of a dozen cuts that more or less set the stage for Sean's guitar escapades.
Escapades that really shift gears when Chambers cuts it up with Bernard in "Rock Me Baby" that assails listeners with monstrous guitar tones and good ole headcuttin. It's obvious Sean enjoys Allison's company. Bernard's slide fills in "Livin Together" helps the number coast along on slithery shuffle grooves.
Clearly it's Chambers' show all the way. You want Hendrix and Stevie? You have it in original composition "Return To Groove" with its heavy wah-wah tones. Title cut "Humble Spirits" is an acoustic based number with Sean attempting his hand at re-creating sounds of Delta slide. Even he will admit it's unfinished work. His coverage of an obscure Muddy Waters' number "Tom Cat" pulls out ZZ Top styled solos as it becomes modernized rockin blues.
Sean can grind an axe with the best of them. The only problem is many other kids are aping the same sounds. But "Humble Spirits" may be still hard to pry out of a cd player. Just ask those who saw Sean at Tampa Bay Blues Fest 2004.
