One of the most innovative blues artists out there working today, Bill "The Sauce Boss" Wharton is back with his eighth CD release in the form of "Come And Get It" on Burning Disk Records.
This Monticello, Florida based blues artist serves up one of the most exciting and fun live shows in music today.
Here is a man, dressed like a chef, cooking up a pot of gumbo on stage, while dishing out some of the best slide based blues one will hear.
His career was helped out considerably when, Jimmy Buffett recognized and honored Wharton in one of Buffet's songs. "I Will Play For Gumbo". This opened Wharton's music to an all new fan base, the very loyal Buffett "Parrotheads".
His music has been described as "swampy Florida blues", but is a sound that is based on Caribbean rhythms, with a New Orleans edge.
If a person is looking for a deep grooved Southern blues CD, this is not what Wharton is serving up.
It's a CD that is built upon the rhythms of the Caribbean with a "blues base to it".
On his new 2004 release, "Come And Get It", Wharton offers up 13 outstanding cuts. Wharton shows what a prolific writer he is, having penned eleven songs on the CD.
Backing the Sauce Boss on this release include: Magic John-bass, Big Jim-drums, and Bernard Aljaleen-percussion.
The CD opens with "The Gumbo Song", a relaxing acoustic based number with a easy island rhythm track backing it. A comfortable start.
"Dirty Rice" shows off Wharton's solid slide work, keeping on with the "sauce boss cooking" theme. It's the most blues based cut on the CD.
The sauce boss put some great acoustic numbers on this release. "Come and Get It", "The Bottom of Love", and "I Broke My Heart", feature this style the best.
The CD's final cut, "Four Letter Word" is a four plus minute instrumental that shows off Wharton's guitar skills and is done with a laid back approach. A true stellar cut on this CD.
This is a CD I'd put in the player for the long cross country drive.
If you could imagine "Buffett does the blues", you have a feel of what "Come And Get It" is all about. Another top effort by Wharton, a innovative artist.
