Sweet, hot West Coast harp impact prevails on Piazza & the Flyers latest recording. While the veteran musician's extensive discography bristles with energetic outings, Piazza has upped the ante on "Keepin' It Real". From the funky, driving opener "Big Blues Party" through the smoldering jump of the closer instrumental, "Devil's Foot", this set delivers unrelentingly. Blowing brilliant chromatic blasts to fat, pleading low down soloing, Piazza continues to evolve into one of the most powerful and creative harp players in the blues. Honey Piazza, the other half of this remarkable blues couple, continues to conjure Spann like no one else. Her additional prowess is evident in the excitable piano power boogie "Buzzin'" Honey and Rod compliment each others playing, bringing the quality of hearing this music up to a whole other level. New addition to the band, guitarist Henry Carvajal slides comfortably into the spot formerly occupied by Rick Holmstrom. The set is 13 selections strong (over an hour, all good), pulsates with groove shuffles like "Ain't Nothing Happening" followed by the jump fired harp driven "Ain't Nothing Shakin'". With many years experience on their side, Rod Piazza and the Mighty Flyers represent the best of what Blues music has to offer these days, recorded and live.
