Pauline York has dedicated this album to Stevie Ray Vaughan so it was with that in mind I approached this album and it wasn't quite what I expected, I was rather surprised by the variety of this body of work.
The album opens with Magic Sam's "Easy Baby", with Pauline on vocal and lead guitar, setting out her corner with some very good guitar work whilst Daryl Coutts supplies some good piano fills on this very good opener. Daryl though positively shines on Professor Longhairs "Hey Little Boy" with some great authentic sounding New Orleans piano, a word must also be said about Dexter Hudgins superb drumming thought this wonderful song. "Lowdown In Lodi" one of my all-time favourites written by John Fogerty, is given a smouldering slow workout and it works very well, Pauline's vocal is strong & soulful, Daryl on B3 organ is a joy and Pat "The Snake" Boyack sympathetic lead guitar is another good ingredient which makes this track a winner for me. The album's title track "Blackberry Wine" written by Pauline is a shuffling rocking New Orleans piece of goodness and I must say Pauline sounds just Like Lou Ann Barton as the song romps along.
Tab Benoit's "Still Going Down The Road" is a classic down home blues with Pauline and Pat sharing the guitar duties with some great solo's from them both as Dave "Biscuit" Miller lays a rock solid bass groove. The melodic "Maybe I Will" written by Pauline sounds like it belongs on a Lucinda Williams album and Pauline sounds just like Lucinda on this wonderful tune, also Pat on lead guitar is magnificent, definitely the second best track on this album. "Long Way From Home" a Stevie Ray song is a swaying laid back song in which Pauline is solo, her guitar playing is mournful and her vocal is gritty and soulful.
I like this album it isn't glossed up, to me it is just an honest crafted body of work that deserves attention from anybody interested in real music.
