Phyllis Marie Knight (aka The Orphan Angel) describes her style of blues as "Hip-Hop Rock-n-Blues." On the surface this makes it sound as if she is coming from the same territory as Chris Thomas King. Much of the music on her debut EP on her own independent label, though, falls into what most would call hip-hop. The focus throughout is very much on Knight's voice, which in quite a few places sounds like a smokier version of Ms Dynamite or maybe Mary J. Blige. Therein lies part of the problem. What is here is quite good, starting with "Intro (The Birth)" which nicely links lyrically into "Franky Brown," but there is not enough to make Knight's particular sound stand out from the rest. This is not really helped by the fact that most (if not all) of the music is provided using synthesizers, which makes it sound a bit bland in places. There are quite a few signs of promise, however, so it will be interesting to see where Knight takes things next, particularly given her intention to tackle a wide range of musical styles.
