So I put on the new Nick Curran disc, and in his faithful, true-to-the-bone recreationist way, he proceeds to tear down the house old school style. Two cuts into it, I take it off and go for the real deal: Rhino's excellent "The Very Best Of Johnny Guitar Watson" (now there was a "player") collection. Basking in the utter sharpness of 1954's "Space Guitar", one might wonder just why time ought to be consumed listening to a Curran disc. (Time, is, of course, an ever increasing in value personal commodity.) To further convince myself, I dive into some vintage T-Bone Walker and I'm convinced. With all due respect to latter-day torchbearers, as long as these vital recorded testaments by the originals exist, my listening time belongs, primarily, to them, not the Currans of the world. Now, if it's time to go down to the club and have some fun, obviously it's a better thing to witness the energy and commitment of Curran and band live than get involved in bizarre/voodoo old blues-hero exhumations. My advice: party and dance to the new keepers of the flame live, but spend your money and time more wisely when indulging in recorded music. Not that there's anything wrong with this cool Blind Pig disc, (good gateway stuff for the younger folks) but I'm sure some of you know what I'm saying.
