One doesn't often hear of a blues artist working out of the state of Montana, but the Big Horn state has a real deal blues player in the form of Mike Bader.
Bader works and plays out of Missoula, Montana, but his musical roots hail back to the rich blues region of Cedar Rapids and Linn County, Iowa.
In early 2004, Bader traveled back to Cedar Rapids and brought together some of the Hawkeye states's best blues musicians to back him on his first solo outing.
Recording with guitarist Bader was his brother Dave on bass, Mike O'Connell-drums, Craig Erickson-second guitar (Craig Erickson Project), and one of Midwest's best keyboard players, Tom "T-Bone" Giblin. (Lonnie Brooks, Elvin Bishop, Linn County Band, and Mighty Joe Young)
Bader's musical style is influenced by rhythm and blues, a little Latin and reggae, with a very soulful edge.
One can tell when these old friends came together to record this disc, they were working in a fun atmosphere with a real love for the music that Bader had written.
Bader's strong guitar playing along with Giblin's keyboard work, really make this CD shine. The husky vocals of Bader, make for a very distinctive vocal sound.
Bader is more inclined to go the way of the slow blues number, almost ballad style on this CD. "Power Shaft Blues", Four Times The Pain", "Clearcut Case Of The Blues", and "Any Kinda Day", show his prowess in this area.
The 8th cut on this CD, "Shufflin' In A", really showcases Bader's guitar work and his tight interplay with B3 master, Giblin.
"Clearcut Case Of The Blues" features eleven strong cuts, all written and arranged by Bader. This little disc clocks in at 56 minutes of great Midwest and Rocky Mountain based blues. If you enjoy quality blues, pick this CD up, you won't be disappointed.
