Despite a short break in the 80's, Little Feat has long been established as the premier jam band and has influenced such acts as The Dave Matthews Band and Phish. Following 13 studio albums, the band continues with their notoriously recognizable eclectic mix of country, rock, and blues on their first effort in 3 years, Kickin' It At The Barn. Recorded live in the studio with few over-dubs, the disc captures the essence of an intimate concert performance. From the salsa-soaked up-tempo 'Corazones Y Sombras' to the smoke-filmed-room blues of 'I'd Be Lying'- featuring Shaun Murphy soulfully haunting vocals - the tunes are varied yet there is a continuity that gives the record a nice flow. Little Feat still draw from early influences reminiscent of The Band and "Heaven Forsaken" has Big Pink's finger prints all over it. But rather than resting on laurels of the past, these veteran musicians are willing to experiment. Mid-way through the profound 'Fighting The Mosquito Wars', Eastern rhythms manifest only to return to return to the moving cadence of this introspective song. Variety is the key to this records appeal and there is literally something for everyone. After 35 years and countless live shows, Little Feat sound as fresh as they did in the 70's, if not better.
