If you talk about great guitarists in Canada you have to include the name Greg "Junior" Demchuk. I first heard him play many years ago when he was the lead man in well-known West Coast Blues band the Twisters. Greg, as they say, 'Blew my top off' mixing Jazz, Blues and R&B licks into his solos like a few that I have ever seen. After a few years with the Twisters he joined up with another band that was also about to become one of the hottest bands around, the Rockin' Highliners. The time Greg spent with them he travelled and further developed his intense guitar playing. He eventually left the Highliners and moved back to B.C.
Back home Greg has finally released his first solo CD with a new band the Du-Rite Aces on the Big Box Records label titled "deal me in". On this recording not only is his guitar pickin' the best I've heard yet; he has taken over the position as front man in this band, singing and writing a number of the tunes.
'Bluesabillysurf' is the only way I can describe the different types of music explored on this album.
The record starts with the rockin' R&B number "Shake 'Em Up Baby" then rolls into a kool version of Carl Perkins' classic "Matchbox". Next up, Greg's instrumental - "Fairmont Stomp" which takes you back into a previous era. Eddie Taylor's 1957 Vee-Jay track "Lookin' For Trouble" gives some straight ahead Chicago Blues. "Goldtop" reminds me of the time when there were numerous guitar surf instrumentals around in the early 60s. Another one of Greg's tunes, "Someday, Someway" drives along complete with a fine solo from him. The Blues knocks on the door once again in "Somebody New" with Greg blowin' the harp work on this cut. A new mood is felt in the instrumental, "Mole' Mambo". Things start to R 'n' R on "Trucker From Tennessee" with horn section and steel guitar and Greg out in front of everything. "When My Love Comes Down" is a one of those songs I describe as 'haunting'. The instrumental "Down Yonder" has Greg wailin' away once again. "Baby You Gone" and is hard hittin' Rockabilly with a tinge of the Blues. The CD ends with another rocker "Kissin' Fool".
Whew! This release with different vibes really took hold of me. Hot guitar, tight band, what more can a music lover ask for! Greg Demchuk & the Du-Rite Aces "deal me in", pick this recording up and after one listen you'll agree Greg is one of the great guitarists in Canada or anywhere.
