What About Love is Deborah Coleman's seventh CD and the first on Telarc. Coleman is one the few African-American female blues guitar players around. This CD sounds similar to her other releases. Her sound is characterized by strong, economical guitar licks, tight song arrangements and straight ahead vocals with relationship-related lyrics.
Coleman's songs do not follow a traditional blues scheme. Track 4" Can You Hear Me" reminds me a Robert Cray soul-blues song. The slow pace is the closest to a true blues ballad on this disc. "Lie No Better" has slide guitar playing similar to Bonnie Raitt's and the tempo will make you want to move. Did you ever hear a song that stays in your mind and won't let go? Coleman's reworking of the Everly Brothers' "When Will I Be Loved" is one of those tunes. " Love's Like Rain is arguably the best song on the CD. She sings with more authority and confidence than anything else I've heard from her previously. Her guitar playing teases you with a short solo in the middle for one a longer one at the end that is just on fire. I would imagine that in .concert, she "pulls out all the stops" on this song .
If you like songs about love and relationships Deborah Coleman is your woman. The CD is aptly titled "What About Love". The CD has eleven tracks and every one ( except for "River World", which is an instrumental) is a love song. Actually 5 of the 11 songs have the word love in the titles.
Deborah Coleman is an anomaly in the blues world. Her music is uniquely her own style.
What About Love Is Deborah Coleman's testament to consistency and vision of her blues.
