The Brothers Curtis have captured the essence of their live show on their latest release “Its You Thats Got To Go.” The band consists of local blues harmonica legend Curtis Blake along with the versatile guitar wizardry and smooth vocals of Curtis Marlatt. The title song and first track of “Its You Thats Got To Go” could easily become the new anthem for people facing divorce all around the world; lyrics such as “Take the dog, take the house, I don’t care baby, its you thats got to go” are an example why. With infectious grooves and changing rhythms this song sets the tone and energy for the rest of the tracks.
The band adds a rocking Rory Gallagher feel to “That’s What The Blues Is All About” originally recorded by Albert King. The band switches to Chicago blues with a great version of “Walking By Myself” by Jimmy Rogers. Blake plays some melodic harmonica during his solo that emulates the vocal line. One of my favorite songs on this CD is a cover of “Trouble In My Mind” by Mississippi bluesman Big Bill Broonzy because it takes us down to the delta.
“This goes out to all the guys who don’t know how to dance until the band does a slow one” Marlatt sings to start the slow grinding blues of “Driftin’ Blues.” The harmonica playing on this song is all about killer tone control. Curtis Blake plays it high and low and hits every note in between. The band switches things up a bit with a take on Howlin’ Wolf’s “Who’s Been Talking?” Next up is a slow building cover of the Rolling Stone’s “Can’t Get No Satisfaction”; the band gives this song a unique Muddy Waters feel. The band also slices up a funky R&B feel to the Fenton Robinson classic “You Don’t Know What Love Is.” Curtis Marlatt shows his guitar versatility all throughout this song with Wes Montgomery style chords and ripping guitar leads.
“It’s You That’s Got To Go” is a great blues party CD that you can throw in your player, turn up real loud, grab a cold one, and you instantly feel like you are in the middle of a smoky blues club. If you love great party blues music that you can shake your booty to, head on out to The Brothers Curtis next gig and pick yourself up this fine CD.
