Once in a while, an instrumental guitarist comes along with something new. Not the same old “Crossroads duel” sound that has be regurgitated and spewed over and over. Enter Boobie Browne and the Onions. Their debut CD Birth of the Chickenpick has mellow and fresh guitar sounds fused with blues, rock, country and funk. This CD has something for even the most eclectic tastes.
The incredible guitar work is courtesy of Boobie Browne, a Newfoundland native living in Toronto whose influences are hard to pinpoint from the disc, but something or someone has had a serious effect on this talented young man. Some of the most beautiful examples of his talent can be found on the track Precious. A moving piece that one can’t help but dream to. Tele Savalas is a fun and happy sounding tune that has great support from The Onions. On bass guitar, Keith Power keeps the rhythm, and Scott MacCulloch is fantastic on drums. Another great track from Birth of the Chickenpick is the funky Patrick Takes Out Life Insurance. Even the song titles are fantastic!!
Boobie will be competing in the North American Rock Guitar Competition on June 16th as one of the top 5 finalists. Visit www.guitarfestival.org/RockComp.asp for more info on the competition. His fantastic style of instrumental guitar music has been played on radio programs from Newfoundland, Japan, Spain and Denmark and of course, Toronto.
