This is Bill Perry’s third release with Blind Pig, and by far, his bluesiest to say the least. He was heavily influenced by people such as Albert Collins, Johnny Winter, Freddie King, and of course, Hendrix. Many times people will ask me about the new sounds of contemporary blues and where it’s going. In most cases, I answer in the positive reminding people that each generation has something to offer. For instance, in regards to the above, I’ve shared the spotlight with Albert Collins and Johnny Winter, but I was far from influenced by them. Like them, I came from a generation of players who were lucky enough to have actually learned from several well-known first generation players—so there for—I play in the “old school” style and added my own tricks and originals (leaning more towards experimental nowadays). Albert Collins was influenced by many of the first generation players but he was just to damn explosive to sit still! There’s no way Perry could take a seat—he must have blisters on his blisters! On track #1, “Bluesman” he kicks into high gear and creates an anthem for the contemporary crowd, track #2 follows in the same mode with a nice chop and bounce—“Big Ass Green Van” is very bluesy with some relentless fret work. You get a ticket to NYC, and land in Harlem—not one of my favorite places—and for good reason; people are justifiably pissed off on track #3. Perry’s “Live On” is as soulful as it gets—in comparison to what they pawn off on MTV, and other commercial venues. The following seven tracks follow course—strong and steady. A nice shift from Mr. Perry and guest metal shredder Popa Chubby.
