Pianist Al Copley is one of the co-founders of the legendary jump band, Roomful of Blues, and has recorded with such recent notables as the Fabulous Thunderbirds, Duke Robillard, Greg Piccolo and Lou Rawls, along with classic artists Big joe Turner and Eddie "Cleanhead" Vinson. Along with a "performed with" list that is too long to mention, Copley has maintained a successful solo career that includes performances throughout the world and four solo recordings including his latest on One Mind Records, Jump On It.
Most notable about Jump On It (and perhaps most surprising), is the fact that this is Copley's first domestic release in over ten years. With a fine band that includes an excellent three piece horn section of Curt Ramm (trumpet), Jimmy "B" Biggins (tenor sax) and Arno Hecht (tenor & baritone sax), along with the rhythm section of Bob Parr (bass) and Floyd Murphy, Jr. (drums), Jump On It is a full tilt boogie ride of party time jump blues that exemplifies Copley's considerable talents as a piano player and demonstrates the vocal skills that never got a chance when he was a member of Roomful of Blues.
Jump On It contains only one Copley original ("The Last Thing I Needed") in the ten song set, but Copley's stamp is on every other song, ranging from the soulful Percy Sledge penned "Please Send Me Someone to Love" to his edgy delivery on "The Big Ten Inch Record." The CD also includes some bar band standards like "Louie Louie" and Holland-Dozier-Holland's, "How Sweet It Is," with Copley taking the songs to a level that makes them an enjoyable listen.
The songs on Jump On It, are filled with the standard musical themes of new love, lost love, forever love and tortured love, with a dose of party, party, party. His piano boogies and his band helps keep everything together for a fun filled musical experience.
