"Keeping the Blues Alive Award" Achievement for Blues on the Internet Presented by The Blues Foundation
Smokin' Joe Kubek is no stranger to blues fans. With his Lone Star associate, Bnois King in tow, Kubek's guitar prowess has now been featured on more than a half-dozen recordings. Following a lengthy relationship with the Rounder/Bullseye label, the pair have landed with Blind Pig and slice through ten tracks of high-powered blues on Roadhouse Research. King's vocals begin from deep down and manage to traverse the same path as Smokin' Joe's intense and distorted guitar, prominently displayed on Got To Get Paid, a funked-up burner, and the groove slows way back for Runnin' Blind, a smoldering drag laced with molten guitar licks. Better Be Getting On is a rumbling Texas shuffle, but the rhythm section of Paul Jenkins and Ralph Power seem to be wound a little too tight instead of relaxing behind the beat. King's throaty voice sounds solid on the uptown grind of The Blues Is Still With Us and Kubek lets loose with some sizzling slide antics for I Need More, and the dynamically charged Standing In My Door gets the nod as the nastiest sounding guitar work in the entire Smokin' Joe Kubek catalog, one that is steadily growing, and still delivering lots of Texas grime and grease. www.blindpigrecords.com. 10 tracks, 47 minutes.
