Most rock and blues enthusiasts are familiar with the name "Savoy Brown." The group started hammering out hit singles between the years 1968 to 1971. Kim Simmonds started the band before 1966, and was an influential force in early British blues/rock. The original band: Chris Youlden (vocal), Dave Peverett, Roger Earle, and Tony Stevens, all went their separate ways; Youlden continued as a solo act, and the other members formed the group Foghat. Simmonds, always the genius, re-formed and eventually went platinum on the charts. I'm sure many old fans can remember the classic 1972, "Hellbound Train" album. Over the years, there would be line-up changes with the group, and yet, the band itself, would remain successful. And here we are, in the year 2003, with yet another-and equally powerful-"Savoy Brown!" Kim Simmonds wrote all of the tracks accept the third and the fourth (a collaboration with Gerry Sorrentino/bass player). The band delivers a fine showcase of there individual talents on the first two tracks-outstanding vocals from Simmonds. Ironically, the third song (a cover): "Meat Shakin' Woman," by Blind Boy Fuller, is my personal favorite on this recording--check out the slide guitar-phenomenal! Some damn fine fret work follows on track #5-very bluesy. Track #6, has a Louisiana swamp feel to it, with a hint of a slap-echoe vocal effect-sweet! The next two songs move along a contemporary blues path-again, great guitar work and strong vocals; places them in the-above-the-norm category. The final two tracks are killer-love these guys!
