Rick Moore and Mr Lucky Band "Live in the U.S.A." is a nine-song disc of material recorded at a performance at the Bourbon Street Blues and Boogie Bar on May 12th 2001. With Rick Moore on guitar/vocals, Sammy Stafford effortlessly handling lead guitar and backup vocals, Tim Hinkley holding court on keyboards/backing vocals (lead on Guilty), Jerry (Snake) King rock solid on bass/vocals and Mike Caputy anchoring the ensemble on drums. This quartet flat out rocks the uptempo cuts and the smoldering treatment given to Guilty, a New Orleans inspired, passionate retelling of a familiar blues theme is the highlight of the disc. On Chicken House Blues Sammy employs a wah-wah pedal to add a punchy chicken sound to the story of a house used for after hours activities that Rick claims existed until an uncle burned it down. A slowed down version a Albert King's I Wanna Get Funky offers an interesting interpretation of a blues standard. The tasteful and soulful piano solo that transitions into a slide solo that hits notes somewhere in the stratosphere adds a different and unique touch to this classic. The final track Swingin' Her Stuff starts with and continues throughout with stellar slide work reminiscent of Roy Rogers or Sonny Landreth disc.
This is an undeniably talented group of blues players that work well together and when offered the solo each member of the group makes a noteworthy personal musical statement. These guys have been paying blues dues for some time and it shows. Covering a lot of blues territory in nine selections makes this a disc to add to the list of ones to pick up.
